This Saturday May 12th from 5:30 - 7:00 pm we had our Lasagna Gardening Workshop! ”Lasagna” or “Sheet” gardening is extremely easy and quick way to get a rich, perfect garden space by layering organic carbon and nitrogen sources for your vegetables. After the layering demo, we feasted on some delicious Italian fare courtesy of Grazzie Restaurant in Vaughan!
Here is how you can create a Lasagna style garden at home!
1: Lay down bundles of newspaper (each bundle is about 12 sheets)
2: Splash some water on top of the newspaper so it doesn’t get blown away. The worms will also like it because it will be easier to decompose
3: Add a layer of fruit and veggie scraps from your compost. Make sure there are no meat or cheese scraps in there!
4: Put a layer of carbon source down. This is your browns or “old dead” materials like straw or dry, brown grass. In this case, we used a layer of hay.
5: Put down a layer of your nitrogen source. This is your greens or “new dead” materials like fresh grass after mowing the lawn. Make sure there are no weeds or dandelion seeds in the mix!
6: Put down a layer of coffee grounds. Starbucks will usually be happy to donate as much as you need!
7: Put down another layer of your nitrogen source.
8: Cover it with top soil.
You now have a perfect base for your future garden! It is much better to start this base in the fall and then come back to it in the spring so you have the layers have time to set. If you start at this time, the best vegetables to grow are tomatoes, potatoes and garlic!
You are invited to the 2012 Official Opening of our Growing to Give Garden!
Come and join us on Saturday May 12th from 5:30 - 7:00 pm with a Lasagna Gardening Workshop - an easy method using organic material layering or sheet composting that builds rich soil easily without digging and tilling. After prepaing our “propagation bed for future seeds” we will celebrate with some Italian fare to start off your evening!
The garden is located at Fire Hall #7-1, located at 835 Clark Avenue West.
Parking is available at Bathurst Clark Library at 900 Clark Avenue West

Community Composting!
As we are starting our gardening season once again, we will be implementing our composting program! We want to help local businesses reduce their negative impact on the environment by composting their food scraps in our gardens.
The composting program is simple. Local restaurants will put aside their fruit and vegetable scraps and a representative from Seeds for Change will come and pick it up once a week and compost it in our gardens. It’s as simple as that! We hope to get many restaurants interested in partaking in this program to help make our community more environmentally friendly! If you are interested, please contact nicole@seedsforchangegardens.org or lynne@seedsforchangegardens.org
